You have to watch out which version of a browser you are using.
IE 5.5 has different issues than say, IE 5 with saving or viewing
attachments correctly. I have had to open it from location and
then save it to get attachments to work correctly - even using
Yahoo's Email!
Also with viewing Word based email, you have to hit the forward
button to read it correctly. for some reason the forward
formats the email. (why they don't use this as a fix for the
normal viewing I don't know, somthing is obviously working).

I have found that if right-click on the attachment link and
choose "save to
disk" you can then open it in the appropriate application.
