Thanks for the help, but I'll admit still being a bit confused.
When I setup MX records for another domain, it makes sense to have those
records point to the mail server, which is in our domain. However, it seemed
circular to me to have the MX records point to a FQDN. So let me see if I
understand the logic:
A system wants to resolve an address, such as [EMAIL PROTECTED] So
it looks up the MX record for bcwebhost.net, which you say should show what?
mail.bcwebhost.net? How does it resolve that? Does it go to the A record
for mail.bcwebhost.net and thus find the right IP address? It can't go to
the MX record for mail.bcwebhost.net, because that would resolve to
mail.bcwebhost.net, leading to a circle. I thought if the MX record pointed
directly to the IP address, resolution could be settled in one step.
I guess I don't know how the host name is resolved that you get from querying
an MX record. Does it then use the A record?
I'm also confused by your question about ns1.bossig.com. That server belongs
to an ISP that we cooperate with. We list it as a secondary DNS, and it is
supposed to have a copy of all our zones (but we don't act as secondary for
it, so we don't have any of their zones). At times I've asked the people at
BossIG if we needed to configure forwarders or secondary zones for them, and
the answer was no. They claim to have all they need. Can you explain what
types of records you were expecting to see in our zone?
Thanks very much for your help.
