I agree that IMail's webserver has a significant problem with serving
multiple, small gifs. In addition to the numerous red-x's you'll see,
you'll also notice that the gifs aren't cached by the browser, forcing the
browser to reload them on each page load.

Our Killer templates have a single config file where you can enter the
path to a REAL webserver (IIS on the same or a different box) for all the
images, thus speeding up the interface by at least 2X and allowing the
browser to properly cache all the images.
