there's an old joke in this business, goes like this:
you can have it either Good, Fast or Cheap... pick any two!
here are some links at the bottom of this message. follow the links in
order, and search every related link.
when you say efficient, i hope you don't mean cheap. cheap is not always
cost effective over the long run. this is expensive in terms of up front
cost. mscs is m$ cluster service. oh, don't know who m$ is? it's a
pejorative acronym for micro$oft. i don't hate m$, i think all the NOS
vendors stink. thank God they do all stink, or i'd be driving trucks or
slinging burgers for a living. take the links in order. i experimented with
2 old proliants that were almost identical, and that were able to share a
common raid 5 drive array. get imail unlimited, i got over 5000 users over
here already, it's worth every phargin penny. the fail over cluster is the
way to go first.
kid, i been doin dis stuff faw twennyfi' year. i remember ticker tape, that
was BEFORE punch cards. what i'm saying is, if your money people don't go
for this, remind them that they're stomach linings and mental state are more
expensive to maintain than a reliable server configuration.
since i went cluster i have had ZERO customer down time caused by me.
that's priceless.
if you have really deep pockets, go with a wlbs cluster: put it in upstream
from your web and mail boxes. at the moat throw up a pair cisco pixes to
guard the door. it's about 600 manhours to setup from soup to nuts. that's
everything incl AD design and web modifications, router setup, and yada
yada. we're an ISP, so we had to jump through some extra hoops to pull this
off. my AD is still not exactly right 'cuz you theoretically can NOT run AD
on a mscs box. the work around is to add another server to the mix (same
domain, same subnet, that's important!) to keep a backup copy of the AD so
that mostly changes only are read between cluster nodes inside of the
cluster. the extra server can be any workstation or old server that is
capable of running w2kas and AD, lots of memory and 2 fast nics. READ the q
articles and be prepared for at least half a dozen $upport call$ to
micro$oft and your hardware vendor.
