There are some virtually foolproof ways to deal with telemarketers:

[1] When standing up to telemarketers, be sure NOT to say "I'm not
interested". Translated to telemarketerese, that's "I'll be interested in
a month or two". Do not say "Please take me off your list" -- this means
"Please call me back again" (rather, "Please take me off your 'do not call
list'"). If you don't want them calling back, the key words are "Please put
me on your do not call list". If you say those magic words, they can't
call back for 10 years (in the U.S., at least!).

[2] Get Caller-ID. I have yet to see a telemarketer that didn't show up as
"Unavailable" (or "Private" occasionally for local telemarketers) , but
have never seen a non-telemarketer show up as "Unavailable". If someone
does, they can leave a message on the answering machine.

[3] Buy one of those gizmos that you add to your phone where you can just
press a button as soon as you recognize the call to be from a telemarketer,
and it will automatically send the "Do not call list" speech and hang up
for you. That's for the really timid people, but would get the job done.
