2 or 3 times a week we fire out about 10k of emails. Takes our db a few of
minutes to generate these and dump them to IMail for IMail then to send out.
Left to its own devices IMail takes a couple of days to clear this lot,
finally sick of the complaints about how long it takes to shift the emails I
logged onto the IMail server to take a look at what was going on.
Found there were 6 SMTP processes and from the speed of processing ( less
than 6 a minute ) I reckon only one or two processes were being used for
outbound mail the rest were there for inbound mail.
Well the IMail server has a couple of fast processors and bags for memory so
I wrote a batch file to fire up another SMTP process and clicked away till I
had 60 SMTP processes running. Well cpu utilization was upto 50% but thats
OK and now we running around 500 messages a minute and some 20 mins later as
the queues cleared the processes droppped out one by one.
I was staggered that IMail had gone from a dog to a star, BUT its still a
MAJOR pain in the butt that whilst our email system is fully automated if I
want to sendout bulk mail I have to remeber to go to the server and fire up
the extra processes.
My question is/are
1) Why is IMail so brain dead in the first place to not start up extra
processes to handle the large outbound queue.
2) Is there someway I can automate this or tell IMail I ALWAYS want 50/60
processes for outbound mail...
