The RFC states that the MX record is a host name. That's just what it has
to be. You and I can look at "196.32.76.50" and tell that it is an IP
address. But if a computer program expects it to be a host name and looks
up the A record for "196.32.76.50", it isn't going to find one.

Sendmail either wasn't programmed to properly handle this situation, or
they decided to work around sites with such a DNS error.
