I visited Europe once. I remember in the Athen's airport watching a man
urinate on a potted palm tree. Near him in the window of a gift shop was a
sign on which was written "The birthplace of western civilization".

Then the airport had some sort of strike and a small tank began driving
around the terminal. I don't know if it was to keep us inside or if we were
being protected from something outside. I remember thinking that a dozen of
us could probably catch the tank and overturn it if we had to.

Our tour leader told us not to worry as these kinds of strikes are
commonplace in all of Europe but that they didn't last long. A few minutes
later someone wearing some sort of uniform told him we'd have to be split
up. Of course if we paid some US dollars something might be arranged. He
refused and asked for a phone to call the US counsel (pre cell phones).
About 4 hours later we resumed our trip - all together.

I've never really wanted to travel again to europe. I watch Rick Steve's
show anyway and vicarious travelling is rather enjoyable and exceedingly
cheaper.

I am the 8th generation of my surname in the United States. My ancestor who
came to the US brought his son in 1738 from the area between France and
Germany. He was escaping religous persecution of the grinding poverty of
almost continuous war. Both father and son came as indentured servants for
a term of 7 years. Later that son was killed by Torries in North Carolina
in 1781. Freedom came for my family at a very high price.

To be fair to the USA, Mr. Dubya has at least visited Europe now (although
he did need to get a passport after he was President).

Pity he didn't get lost on the way.
