IMGate would definitely help you.
To stop the attack NOW, simply look to see what IP addresses they are
coming from, and find out what ISP it is. Tell them when it is happening
and the IP it is coming from. Tell them to kill the account of the person
doing it. If it is a responsible ISP, they will take care of the
problem. If it is not a responsible ISP, block all IP ranges they own, and
send the IPs to all the spam databases that you can find that will list them.
A good defense is very important, but a good offense can be just as
useful. We had a spammer-for-hire that was occasionally using return
addresses on one of our domains for about 6 months (so we would get
hundreds of bounce messages). We kept at it, and finally found the company
that processes their credit card transactions, and gave them all the
information. They responded that they took away the spammer's merchant
account. Guess what? We haven't heard from them in the 2 months since
this happened (they used to send a new batch of spam every week or two).
Now, we just have to track down the spammer that has broken into about 20
computers and has them send batches of 20-400 E-mails at a time through our
server and many others.
