use a list server that automatically removes the user from the list after x 
number of bounces.

this means you are an open relay, and that may be why your logs have 
exploded.  Maybe someone has hijacked your server and is relaying spam 
through it.

This would cause you to get blacklisted much quicker than sending large 
volumes of mail to you own list members.

Use only SMPT AUTH for relaying, and check No relay or relay for addresses.
