I though about it, but would rather not have the downtime of an upgrade
closely followed by the downtime from a server upgrade. Setting up the
domains, moving the accounts and moving the users mail isn't a big deal once
you've got the scripting done. If convert.exe will get the job done this
would be my preferred method.
I'm moving from:
NT4 SP6a
pII 450 512M RAM
Hardware mirrored IDE
To:
Win2K SP2
Dual 1 GHz PIII Coppermine 1 Gig RAM
4 15000 RPM IBM SCSIs in a RAID 5 Array for System (C:) and mailboxes (D:)
on an Adaptec controller w/64 Meg RAM
2 15000 RPM IBM SCSIs in a RAID 0/1 (Mirrored) Array for the spool (E:) on
another Adaptec w/64 Meg RAM
This seems like quite a jump, but I don't want to do this again anytime
soon, and with the addition of quite a few domains and now that I'm using
Declude to scan every incoming and outgoing message, I feel the upgrade is
necessary. My current server runs at about 75% to 90% CPU usage all
throughout the day, but the real slowdown is those IDE drives. Separating
the spool/logging from the OS/mailboxes seemed like a good idea, and the
dual separate SCSI controllers were a pain to set up but now function
marvelously. Testing on the new box looks real impressive.

Scott, could you just go ahead and get the old machine up to V7 and then
move everything over?
I'll be doing the same thing in a few months. What OS are you using (old&
new)? I''m thinking about a W2K server w/dual CPUs to replace a aging
Pentium Pro (whopping 200Mhz!) running NT4sp6a
