we had a very UNtechnical client runing this way very 
successfully.  Exchange for internal collab stuff, and Imail for external 
mailboxes.   All they had to do in Exchange was set up two personalities in 
Lookout, which even the dumbest of them understood.

Even when somebody sent mail to an internal user but using the user's 
public email address, the mail still arrived.

try my exchange/internal+imail/external suggestion with a test internal 
user or two.

another idea:

in the DMZ, you could set up a webmail server that read POP or IMAP boxes 
on the exchange box.  the strict firewall would allow ONLY the DMZ webmail 
server through, which would be a tiny, simple allowance by the firewall.
