if the domain has an MX record there are some posibilities:
Your network doesn't have the correct MX info for the domain. If you are
able to run NSLOOKUP from your IMAIL server run it.
then type
set type=mx
then type your domain name
e.g.: domain.com
it would tell you were the MX of that domain is pointing to.

if it is not right, then the problem is within the internal DNS

if it is right then there is a chance that the problems is because the
domains don't have the @ and * records set.
for example.
www.domain.com goes to 11.11.11.11 (A record)
make sure
@.domain.com goes to 11.11.11.11.11 (A record)
and
*.domain.com goes to 11.11.11.11.11 (A record)

being 11.11.11.11. the correct IP number you are using of course.

the @ and * are wildcards. Depending on your DNS server you should be able
to set those records.

Some mail servers (includind IIS virtual server) checks for the * or @
record for the domain it is sending the mail to. Actually I don't remember
if it is the @ or the * record. I believe it is just the @ record.

I hope it helps.

otherwise, please send the log of the error to take a look.
