On a large IMail installation, SMTP delivery duties are second only to web messaging in resource intensiveness. It's so easy to move those duties *off* the primary mail server, that it doesn't make sense not to, especially if you're having any sort of resource problem or concern. We're not what I would call a "large" IMail installation, but when we set up a Postfix box running Len's IMGate as our relay machine for IMail, our list deliveries got significantly faster, and our spool directory hasn't backed-up since.
