make directory list of dir /imailboxestopdirectory/main*.mbx /s and see if one or more has become humongous. I suspect that when Imail gets very busy, and then has to scan huge mailbox files for imap or webmail, it screws up SMTP AUTH and the scanning process. just a guess. imap is evil, webmail is evil, for encouraging uses to keep huge mailboxes on the server.
