The hosts in LDAP are only for LDAP referrals.

This is what we're running into too. I'm implementing openldap on top
of the IMail user database to get at least a list of names + E-mail
addresses. Because the IMail user database doesn't contain phone, etc, it
can't be searched for any other information. Theoretically it could use the
IMail LDAP server as a back end to retrieve information not in the IMail
user database.
OpenLdap uses full ACLs to control who can see what. On second thought,
openLDAP could serve as a front end to IMail's LDAP and provide just the ACL
functionality. IMail's LDAP would remain behind the firewall.
