The problem is imail tries to show them in-line without using a link(using a
simple <img src=path/to/image.tif> tag).

WebMail is smart enough to know a .tif is an image, but too dumb to know that
most(all?) browsers can't handle a tiff as the target of  a img tag.

I think this behavior is in one of the black-box tags and can't be
controlled(would be happy to be wrong) via the templates.
