Jo, I use Immsgexp in a Batch file that creates a separate process for each users Mailbox . I find that Immsgexp will lock all mailboxes until the process is finished (whether it is accessing with POP3, IMAP or Web Messaging). So if you run one process that deletes expired email in everyone's folder, it may lock many users until the Expiration job is finished. If you do an expiration on each individual Mailbox, It will only lock the mailbox that it is checking for expiration (a few seconds for each as opposed to 1 - 2 hours to check everyone's).
We have over 5000 email users and I run this batch file in the middle of the day and it does not seem to hinder the any of the services.. I read our user name's from our database and write a separate immsgexp command for each user. I have a script that creates the Batch file so it is fairly easy to do everyday. I used to dread running the immsgexp because it would mean an hour or two of Downtime but now, I have no downtime when doing this.. I am not sure if this is the preferred way to handle this but it works for me.
