FYI, I have confirmed that AT&T now runs tests against mail servers where
it parses out the hostname from the SMTP greeting, and gets "X1" for
mailservers running IMail.
I have also confirmed that there are at least 2 anti-spam databases that
parse out the hostname from the SMTP greeting, and also get "X1" for
mailservers running IMail.
There is also at least one piece of commercial software that detects the
hostname in the greeting, and again gets "X1".
In the past when this issue came up, the issue was largely
hypothetical. However, all signs seem to be pointing to a potentially
serious issue, especially as the spam problem is getting much worse. I am
very glad to see that Ipswitch is taking this seriously. I also do feel
that there is no need to debate whether or not the "X1" is valid, since it
is clear that Ipswitch is aware that this is a potential problem either way.
