I had assumed that the original request was regarding a firewall.

So, it can be summed up like this:

If you are blocking packets with a router, you have to be EXTREMELY 
careful.  You can, without realizing it, either block packets you don't 
mean to block, or allow packets through that you don't mean to let through.

If you are blocking packets with a decent firewall, you the firewall 
*should* take care of everything automatically, and essentially just do 
what you ask.

Ultimately, there should be no need for non-techies to know or care that 
there are client-side ports.
