Alrighty, then!

I haven't thought that yet, so let's keep it on-list.

Uh-huh.

Yes, almost every time! The NULL sender, or '<>', is required by the
RFCs as an allowed sender of bounce messages. Sometimes,
'<MAILER-DAEMON>' or other variants are used instead. But the '<>' is
most common and MUST be allowed if your users are to get bounces.

I bet you do now.

Some MUAs think--quite logically--that an EHLO reply that denies AUTH
support means that AUTH credentials won't be honored, so they are
never sent. Netscape (at least through 4.x) was screwy in an opposite
way, demanding that AUTH *not* be announced if non-authenticated
sessions were requested, IIRC. The bottom line is that turning off
AUTH reporting provides you with 0.01% more security (well, probably
0.00%, but no one likes an absolutist) at a huge possible cost of
alienating perfectly reasonable MUAs. It's not a best practice, unless
your users are standardized on a broken MUA that can't cope.

I wouldn't call it intelligence, just focus--but thanks for the props.
