I had what I believe to be a similar issue like this today for the first time. The domain that it was sending to had 4 mx records. 2 With a preference with "3" and one with a preference of "5", and one with a preference of "100". One of their "3" preference mail servers was down instead of trying the other server with a preference with "3" it jumped right to the "5".
Is that behavior normal if you have two mail servers with the same preference? It looks like IMail is just using the first one returned assuming that they will be returned in order of preference.
