This is actually a different (but related) issue.
My understanding is that the issue that was fixed in 7.12 occurs when the
primary MX record (or one of the primaries, in the case of two MX records
with the same preference) could not be reached. In this case, the other MX
records would not be used in order (or some might be skipped). I believe
this issue only occurred with certain 7.0x versions.
The issue you are experiencing occurs if none of the MX records are
reachable, in which case IMail would go to the A record (the A record
should only be used if the MX record doesn't exist). This was fixed
somewhere around 7.0x.

Actually, my understanding of the issue is that the MX record would be
tried, and IMail would go to the A record if it couldn't reach the MX
record. So with 7.x, IMail would keep re-trying the MX record until it
could connect. With 6.x, IMail would try the A record, with unpredictable
results (the generic IMail "Unknown user" message was the most common).
