I'm a service provider, and I run a few mail servers. Every day I continue to get more and more emails from users saying stuff like:
"why can't I send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] , from my your servers, but I can send it fine from my hotmail account" or: "[EMAIL PROTECTED] can send me email at my hotmail account, but not to my account on your server!" Most of these have a good reason why, but it takes time to troubleshoot, I'm sending test emails back and fourth to try to prove to the customer that it does work. About 20% of my tech support issues have something to do with email. I'm thinking of making a .exe that would run on the server, where you would type the "TO" address, and the "FROM" address, and the .exe would try to look up the MX record, then connect to the destination email server, send the email, etc... Basically, run it thru a series of steps to ensure it CAN send mail to that mail server, and print out the results. If it fails, it would show me the problem. I know the basics, but I don't know all the in's and out's of the RFC's, and how mail servers communicate, so I'm up for a learning experience. Before I start this, does anyone know if there is something out there already that does something similar?
