That is a common problem.  :)

That doesn't really matter, because the ping will usually go to a different 
IP than the mailserver.

The -a just shows you the name of the computer you are pinging.

Again, this doesn't help much, as that will usually lead you to their 
webserver.

You need to look up the MX record for their domain to determine what 
machine to ping (or telnet to, since many people now think that ping is 
dangerous for some reason and block it).

If you let us know the domain, we can help.  Most likely there is a problem 
on their end, such as an MX record that doesn't have a hostname (using an 
IP or something else instead that doesn't belong).
