Had a similar experience with a fairly valuable domain name. Was
referred to Snap but refused and insisted on a release. Threatened
legal action, held my breath, stamped my foot... No luck and no
explanation. After 9 months and a $300 attorney letter the domain was
released.

Had similar less caustic experiences with a few others. I think the
worst of those was 6 months.

I did the snap-names thing. The name expired in December 2001. I got the
domain last month. Calls and emails to Verisign / Network Solutions
resulted in being told the domain had to be "purged from their
database".

I doubt there is a law against it, but I'm sure they will stop when the
villagers shows up with their pitch forks...

Is what Network Solutions is doing regarding "holding" domains hostage
that should be available after the expiration date legal? It seems
there is also company / subsidiary / partner called Snap-Names that will
continue to check a domain's status and order the domain for you when
its available (for a fee of course). Problem is their service seems to
be totally integrated with Net Sol's website, etc. I have a domain that
I would like to register that has been expired for over a month now.

It's really frustrating and I was wondering if anyone had any more light
to shed about what they are up to and what I can do about reserving a
domain name that *should* be available to the public.

Thanks everyone,
