The real question is, "Does the person requesting this have any clue what 
they are requesting?"  Most likely, their boss said "Make it secure!" and 
they said "Use encrypted SMTP!" and that was that.

The problem is that even if you have them connect to your server using 
secure POP3/SMTP (which can be done using an SSL tunnelling program), their 
mail will still go out over the Internet unencrypted.  So any project 
demanding high security shouldn't be using SSL tunnelling.  Any secure 
E-mail requires software on *both* ends to handle the security.  PGP might 
be the best option here.

I once did some work with SSL with web messaging, and it was causing 
intermittent problems -- after using stunnel (which connects to IMail's 
standard web port, not the SSL one), everything worked fine.
