Hmmm....It looks like you've already eliminated most of
the known causes of slow response!
A couple of observations and suggestions:
1. Before you swapped it for the DLink, it concerned me
that the 3CR990 card was one of the most advanced in
the 3COM lineup, and had several unique Win2000-only
"hooks" into the OS. Imail's seeming dislike for
high-end cards (albeit mostly Intels) on W2K had been
demonstrated by several users' experience here. In
contrast, the 3C905 NIC is a known quantity, and is
proven to work well in previously hosed systems (like
mine).
Recommendation: Since you've already replaced it with
the D-Link, I don't hold out too much hope for this one
step. Still, if you have one available, try putting in
a garden-variety 3C905C (borrow or swap one from a
desktop PC if necessary) and see what happens.
2. If you haven't already, make sure the Compaq 3163
onboard NICs are both completely DISABLED in the
server's BIOS setup. In my case, simply disabling the
Intel NICs inside W2K's Device Manager was NOT
sufficient. It defies explanation, but that's what it
took.
3. For sake of completeness, double check your routing
table (ROUTE PRINT from a command prompt) for any
anomalies or long-forgotten persistent routes confusing
iwebmsg. Also from a prompt, run "ipconfig /all" to
verify that the OS internally only sees one IP address
assigned to the NIC.
4. If it is still hosed after you've checked the above,
install Network Monitor (free) or EtherPeek (better) on
the server and grab a capture of the clients attempt at
initial WebMail login and folder refresh. This is key
in verifying exactly where the issue(s) originate.
a.) Carefully trace the sequence of everything, and use
the frame timestamps to note exactly where delays are
actually occurring--starting with the initial TCP 3-way
handshake (Syn, Ack-Syn, Ack).
b.) Check the capture for any hidden name resolution
issues, especially repeated NetBIOS timeouts.
c.) Make sure inbound GET requests are being received
by the server as expected. --Important!-- Inspect the
entire contents of the outbound frames (especially the
addressing). Verify that iwebmsg has not lost its mind,
and is responding appropriately on the expected IP.
If you want another set of eyes, I'll be happy to help
troubleshoot the packet capture file if you
like--simply contact me off-list. With recent
experiences, I can even now analyze them in my sleep!
