A couple of years ago when I installed Imail 6.x on my server the log
files (sysxxxx.txt) showed incoming user logins from the various users
accessing their inboxes via Outlook, Netscape etc. I could see the
login, the retrieval of messages etc.

A short while ago a server crash resulted in a reinstall of Imail. I
can't see users logging in anymore.  Its all smtp and smtpd line items;
no user logins.

I can't find any place to set such a feature. When I installed Imail
there was no setting governing this that I recall. Any ideas, anyone?

SMTP AUTH is an actual authentication mechanism, and requires both a
username and password.

Requiring just a username isn't considered authentication, and is
exactly
how spammers are able to take advantage of IMail's poor "Relay for local

users" and "Relay for local hosts" options (because they don't need a
password).

That would be very bad if it is true. Have you tried sending an E-mail
without using SMTP AUTH to see if it goes through (which would indicate
that SMTP AUTH isn't being used at all)?
