For example, Lotus Notes was for a long time a closed database that required the Lotus Notes client, but Notes stores may now be accessed using a plug-in for Outlook that was written to the MAPI specification. Similarly, WinFax Lite has a plug-in for Outlook that lets you use your fax address book to submit faxes to the WinFax queue without leaving Outlook. By these standards, IMail, especially its proprietary web calendaring and personal address book databases, are not MAPI compliant. On the other hand, the parts of IMail that are standards-based work fine with the built-in MAPI services such as Internet Mail (POP3/SMTP/IMAP4) and LDAP--so, for instance, a standard MAPI "send" command can be used to program the Internet Mail service, which in turn "programs" IMail to send a message.
