I did this with my clients a few weeks back and they were actually able to
"enable" this feature in their client software before we went live with SMTP
AUTH and still send mail.

Found this out more by accident since I had to put off the change to our
servers  for a few days after most of my clients had already made the
changes to their Email apps.

All of them are using O/E or OUtlook mind you. Don't know how this would be
with other apps.
