I recently unchecked the Refuse Null <> Senders checkbox from
IMail Administrator | localhost | Services | SMTP | SMTP Security
after receiving an angry auto response from another server noting that the RFCs state all mail hosts should accept mail from null senders. Checked with the RFCs, angry autoresponder was correct, uncheck the box no big deal!
Good for you. :)
Since making the change, Im noticing a lot of messages sitting in the queue from <> to email addresses that are not part of my domain (e.g. [EMAIL PROTECTED]).
That will happen whether or not the "Refuse NULL <> Senders" option is checked. That just means that someone used a return address of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to send an E-mail, but the E-mail couldn't be delivered. IMail then bounces the E-mail.
Question 1: Are these messages actually being originated from the Imail server itself?
Yes.
The best thing to do in a case like this is to look through the log file for "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", and you'll find more information about it.
Specific case from the example above would be [EMAIL PROTECTED] sent a message to an email account that no longer or has never existed on the system and Imail is attempting to contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] to inform them of the issue but cannot since (probably) webstakesbnc does not exist since it was likely a spammer address.
Correct.
Question 2: Is it cool to just delete these at will?
Yes, if you don't mind the sender not receiving a bounce message. That's fine if it is spam, but if it is a legitimate bounce message (to one of your users, or possibly someone sending E-mail to someone who used to have an account on your server), you may want the bounce message.
