03:14 08:07 SMTP-(00000484) rdeliver aol.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] (1) <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 6672
Then wasn't the email delivered?
"rdeliver" says yes
If so, why do I get an email reply that says:
... while talking to air-xa03.mail.aol.com.: >>> RCPT To:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <<< 550 MAILBOX NOT FOUND 550 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... User unknown
AOL's MXs don't know about user accounts, so can't do per-user reject, so the MXs accept all msg's for @aol.com.
Then other internal boxes try to deliver to the user mailbox (and apply AOL's policies), and it's these internal boxes that do per-user reject and generate the bounce message.
IMGate machines that accept per-domain act the same way. IMGate accepts all mail for @mydomain.com so your Imail log sees the msg as delivered (to IMGate), and then the internal mailbox server (eg, IMail) rejects the msg from IMGate, so IMGate generates the mailer-daemon bounce msg back to the envelope sender.
If the mailbox server exports its list of accounts to IMGate, then IMGate will do per-user accept/reject.
