Hello all ...

I've read through archive posts before posting this question, but I didn't find an answer to this one. I have a question regarding SMTP AUTH and, according to our experience, it's failure. We're using Imail version 7.13.

According to the manual:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
When you use one of the "Relay for" options, you may have users
who need to send mail from an IP address not listed. You can do
this with IMail Servers support for the SMTP AUTH command.
Make sure the remote user selects the "user authorization" option
in their mail client.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I tried this using "Relay mail for" and then specified the IP addresses assigned to the server so that customer web forms would be able to relay email regardless of whether the originating email was from a domain not found on our server. This option worked great for the web forms (they could send with no problem), but customers who use clients like Outlook Express, etc. could not send email - even though they DID have "Use authentication" (or similar) box in its settings checked.

This is an error one customer sent us when the above settings were in place:
--------------------------------------------
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'. Subject 'Test', Account: '[PROTECTED]', Server: '[PROTECTED]', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 not local host hotmail.com, not a gateway', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
--------------------------------------------

I had no other choice but to set IMail to "Relay mail for anyone" so that both web forms and users can send email, but that is not the right solution nor is it a permanent solution.

I am fighting a losing battle here at the office with a co-worker who despises Imail and wants to make the move to Merak's email solution. This issue is driving the nail in the coffin and making my boss even lean toward the switch.

Any advice as to how I can handle this would be most appreciated.
