You definitely make some strong points. Have you ever isolated an offending file that could then be tried across multiple clients and servers by other users and Ipswitch? This is similar to the search for the "zombie-creating messages" that are said to hang SMTP32 sessions. I, too, think I've seen them, but am either too frazzled or too lazy to keep a complete archive.
