Yes, that's actually a known issue (you can search the archives before
posting  in  the  future). The documentation is actually in error--and
the RFC referred to is for SASL, not (E)SMTP AUTH.

Is  there a particular reason that you can't use trusted IPs for those
applications?  Are  there no known substitutes for those apps? I'd say
that  any  app  that  "supports" AUTH should support non-plain AUTH at
this point, or it's time to get a new app.
