David,

I've found that keeping a good hex-editor that's easy for you to use, like
Ultra-Edit, has gotten me out of a pinch several times.  It allows you to peek
right into what character codes are stored in a file.  This particularly helps
if you've accidentally corrupted your own files by trying to edit them :)
