Thanks for that Phil...it confirms what I have been telling my MD, if we
stop our staff forwarding to AOL and Hotmail accounts then we would not be
suffering this problem. I cannot think of any of our corporate clients who
use an AOL account.

Thats why we invested in Imail to provide a corporate e-mail system with
IMAP and WEB access from anywhere or any PC in the world, why would anyone
want anything else...!

As to the recent thread....well I lost interest after about the hundreth
rant.

Thanks once again for an honest answer.

Mark

Hi,

Have you been following the recent thread on this subject (all 300+ posts)
???????

BT generally set rDNS as follows:

Dynamic users get: hostxxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.in-addr.btopenworld.com
whereas static users get: hostxxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.in-addr.btopenworld.com

notice the difference ???? I didn't think so..... Most of the messages on
the list over the last week have been about this and the 'real' solution is
to get BT to set a proper rDNS for you. We even have customers with BT ADSL
using a routed /29 subnet who get the same rDNS as above....

When I tried to get BT to set rDNS for some of our customers I failed
miserably and as certain people will no-doubt tell you (if they aren't
heartilly sick of this subject by now, AOL probably won't be able to help
you either (I am not going to get into who is wrong on this.)

The solution that I have used for my customers is to get them to post via my
'proper' mail server (using SMTP AUTH). This may not be a solution for you
but if you know someone with a mailserver with proper rDNS then try asking
them nicely.

I wouldn't bother posting via BT's mailservers either as they have the added
annoyance of only relaying for domains that they host........

Cheers

Phil

Subject: [IMail Forum] Caught in the middle of AOL and BT

I have been caught by the AOL trap with the message below:

"The IP address you are using to connect to AOL is a dynamic (residential)IP
address. AOL will not accept future e-mail transactions from this IP
address until your ISP removes this IP address from its list of dynamic
(residential) IP addresses."

I have contacted BT, my ADSL provider in the UK and their response is below:

"As regards AOL's perception about static or dynamic IP addresses, all I can
say is, they
are mistaken. Much depends on how they scan and classify open relays or
anonymous
servers. Simply put, your email server's IP address probably doesn't appear
on their lists as a
valid email server and they may be assuming it's dynamic."

BT have suggested I talk to AOL and register our mail server with them...I
have tried [EMAIL PROTECTED] but have never received even an
acknowledgement that they exist...does anybody else on this list have a
contact e-mail address for AOL?

Our server is "No Relay" and we have a static NON Residential IP address on
a NO NAT router.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Mark
