Here is what also happened, the mail server was asking for a DNS lock- up for 127.0.0.1 it did this thousand of times and caused our upstream provider Sprint to lock us out of their DNS server, and then the whole thing stopped delivering mail, because I had the Sprint DNS server address in the SMTP service DNS box.
Problem #1: If you are running your own mailserver, you really should have your own DNS server. At the very least, you could run a copy of BIND on the IMail box.
Problem #2: An anti-spam program really shouldn't be looking up internal, private, loopback, or other non-routable IPs. :)
Can I put more than one DNS server in the DNS box on the SMTP service?
Yes, but.
I'm assuming that IMail v8's anti-spam uses the same DNS servers as IMail. If that is the case, if this happens again and you get kicked off of DNS Server #1, you'll get switched to DNS Server #2 -- but, once you get kicked off of it, you're still out of luck. So to solve this problem, you either need to ensure that mail loops can't occur, or you need the anti-spam software to automatically bypass non-routable IPs (as Declude JunkMail does).
And is this correct that a DNS lock-up needs to be done on local mail?
No, it doesn't. In fact, some spam databases will list non-routable IPs (at least 3 list 127.0.0.1, and others like 192.168.x.x and similar private IPs), so an anti-spam program that does DNS-based spam database lookups should really skip over such IPs.
