I had a problem last week where I couldn't send email to a particular domain.

I was coming up with a SEND ERROR 10054. It looked Imail was connecting, but being immediately disconnected.

Why didn't Imail just try one of their other mail servers which woould have worked because the workaround ( THANK YOU SCOTT) was to put an entry into my HOSTS file to force the mail to a different server?

Is it because it looked like it was connecting that it did not try one of the other servers ?

What event must take place for Imail to try to deliver to an alternate server as specified in a domains MX record ?

The problem is that IMail did connect to the mailserver, but an unusual situation occurred. It's up to IMail to decide how to handle a situation like this, whether to treat it as an error (in which case it tries the other mailservers in the MX record) or as a temporary problem (in which case it will try the same mailserver again later).

Since IMail did connect to the server -- it did respond on port 25 -- it knows that the network is working, the computer is reachable, and it is running a mailserver. Since the mailserver is behaving improperly (disconnecting), IMail figures that it should try again (either there could be intermittent network issues, the server is just starting up or shutting down, etc.).

If IMail received no response from the mailserver (if it wasn't connected to the Internet, for example), or if it received a "port unreachable" message (indicating that it was not running a mailserver), or if it could not resolve the hostname, then it would try the next MX record.
