Why would you expect your mail server to prompt for a password when another mail server is attempting to deliver e-mail to someone whose e-mail account is hosted on your mail server? If a password were required for you and your users to receive e-mail from other people and mail servers on the Internet, you would have to distribute those passwords pretty widely if you and your users wanted to be able to receive e-mail from very many places. Sounds like a wholly unmanageable task to me...
SMTP auth only prompts for a password if someone is attempting to use your mail server to deliver an e-mail message to someone NOT hosted on your mail server, thus helping to prevent you from being an open relay.
