Just a quick note that should be made here. We thank Eric Shanbrom at Ipswitch for finally tracing down our server SMTP problems to an inappropriate NIC. We have always used 3Com, and had a new card in our server, but it was an 'SX' model which I now have learned is targeted for desktop use, not server use. We did not know this could make a difference. We put in an old TX B NIC in and the packet loss problems went away. The other issue was SMTP speed. We noticed a substantial increase in SMTP if we turn logging off all together. It is disappointing to turn this off because we cannot do stats, but it is so much faster, we would rather have the speed. The logging causes so much of a delay that some of our Blat CGI/Perl scripts were timing out very badly. With logging turned off, this is not the case.
Unfortunately we still have a serious problem with Webmail being slow as ever. Replacing the card did not fix this. My own brother has begun using Yahoo after using my system for over five years, deciding Imail Webmail is virtually unusable. We have tried everything. We replaced thr drive, tried text only templates, everything... but it can take 1-3 minutes to navigate a lot of mailboxes on each request. Version 5 was one second where Imail 7 and 8 is ridiculously slow.
