Imail - slow server - mail delivery problems.

How many E-mails do you send/receive per day?

Problems:
I am having problems with the spool directory filling up with files. I have
to clean out 150+ unsent messages a day
I am having delays of 60+ minutes when my spool directory is full of unsent
messages.
My CPU usage spikes seems to average 5-10% but has prolonged periods (2-3
minutes) of 70+%

Have you checked the D*.SMD files to see if there is anything common among them (all very large, all bounce messages, etc.)?

Local messages are now taking 15-20 minutes to process.

The first step to do in this case is trace the E-mail in the log files. Check all the log files, and you'll find out where the delay is.

Web Mail pages take 5-7 minutes to load 10 messages at a time.

That's another big clue. Have you defragged the hard drive recently?

Am I slowing down my server with the notifications and scanning for
attachments?

Banning files by extension is a relatively "cheap" process (actual virus scanning takes much more resources). Sending the notifications would be a problem if you are not scanning for viruses, as you'll end up with tons of bogus bounces (which slowly eat up resources and annoy people).

What is the best way to handle blocking attachments and notifying users?

I would recommend scanning for viruses and blocking the attachments (if you aren't already). That way, the only bounces will be for E-mails that do not contain a virus, minimizing the number of bogus bounces.

Is there a way to quarantine the blocked attachment for later retrieval?

Declude Virus will automatically quarantine the blocked E-mails to the \IMail\spool\virus directory.
