We are experiencing several seconds of delay when establishing POP3
connections to our server, and we cannot figure out what is causing it. The
delay gets longer during peak usage...as high as 10 seconds. There is no
response time delay for SMTP or IMAP4, only for POP3.

Our environment is dual Xeon, 2GB RAM, 6 drives configured as 3 separate
RAID 1 as follows:
1st RAID 1 - system, Imail 8.03, swap, logs (each on separate partitions)
2nd RAID 1 - spool
3rd RAID 1 - user folders on 3 separate partitions with domains separated
alphabetically (ie: A-F on one partition, G-N on other, and M-Z on another)

System usage is:
- 500,000 POP3 connections per day
- 100,000 messages processed by SMTP per day
- IMAP4 usage is minimal
- WebMail is not used

The only resource I could find on this issue was this posting that discussed
a "NetBIOS name lookups timing out"...
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg61670.html

Can anybody confirm that NetBIOS name lookups actually take place when POP3
connections are established? Any other ideas as to what might be causing
this POP3 connection delay?

Many Thanks,

Bill
