We have the large enterprise network storage.  It is using NetApp
for the share, it's definitely not a 'generic server' system.

Thanks for the reply though...  the performance knock could be something
to do with some setting that is on the NetApp share.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Yep, that's consistent.

It  is  not  a  recommended  setup.  If  you  are  undertaking  such a
distributed  architecture,  you  have  to  invest  significant  $$$ in
creating  an  enterprise-quality  SAN;  simply using an SMB share on a
generic server will usually not do.
