NetApp makes a great box, much better than generic, but it's NAS. I'm talking about a SAN, which has a fraction of the overhead and latency. I'd never run IMail over what you would call a "network share" unless *absolutely* sure that the environment could bear the huge slowdown--as yours evidently cannot--while a SAN is perfectly workable provided an adequate budget.
