Subject: Re: [IMail Forum] Free gateway virus scanner
GFI have one that runs on top of the Windows SMTP service. If you download the full trial version which supports several built in scanning engines it will reduce functionality after 30 days to only allow checking using one AV engine which has got to be better than nothing.
I haven't tried it as I've been bogged down in other stuff. The only drawback as I see it is you will need to use the SMTP engine built in to Windows which is one more hop in the delivery path. Since I'm using ASSP as well it and all this lot is going to have to sit on the same box unless I do some serious changes to the network I have resisted to date. In theory you could have ASSP listening on port 25 which would then forward onto the AV solution listening on another port e.g. 26 which would forward onto Imail listening on yet another port. The ports for AV and Imail would have to be protected behind a firewall to prevent abuse. You also need to setup some kind of relay restrictions (I guess in this instance relay for addresses would work you'd just need to set the only allowable address to be where ASSP is situated i.e 127.0.001 if it's on the same box).
The link to GFI is http://www.gfi.com/mailsecurity/anti-virus_freeware.htm they also have a number of other solutions including a freeware version of their anti spam solution, not tried so can't comment on how good it is.
Hope this helps,
Adrian
