So I'd want to have:
mail.officialhostname1.com IN MX 216.xxx.xxx.66
Wrong.
The RDATA field of an MX record is a hostname, not an IP address, and the hostname must have A record.
mail.virtual1.com IN CNAME mail.officialhost.com mail.virtual2.com IN CNAME mail.officialhost.com mail.virtual3.com IN CNAME mail.officialhost.com
CNAMEs are often screwed up, so my general advice is to avoid them always, using A records instead.
And I esp cringe when I see CNAMEs use within 100 miles of anything to do with mail.
