then recommended setup:


mail.officialhostname1.com IN MX 216.xxx.xxx.66
  mail.virtual1.com IN CNAME mail.officialhost.com
  mail.virtual2.com IN CNAME mail.officialhost.com
  mail.virtual3.com IN CNAME mail.officialhost.com

... is doubly ill-advised, because a DNS domain name that has a CNAME 
record cannot have any other records.
