Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the excellent responses!

My first consideration is protection between the rooms; for obvious reasons, it is
imperative that we keep the users totally isolated.

Our second consideration is making sure that users can do everything they need to do,
to the best of our abilities.

Our third consideration is service management via a simple interface installed on a PC
at the serivce desk of the hotel.

The following is being considered:

1. DSL 512/256 Service, connected to

2. 3COM Router with Smart Interface Card (3C13700 with 3C13712), connected to

3. 3COM managed switch (3C17300); all rooms cabled to this device.

The router has to be capable of "VLAN TAGGING", hence the proposed router.

It is our hope that because the managed switch is capable of SNMP, we may be able to
develop a simple Java application customized for the hotel that would be able to
manage port status, so that hotel staff can activate a port upon purchase of the
service, and the port can be scheduled to go inactive at the end of the paid service
time without user interaction. This would prevent the need for hotel staff to work
directly with the web-based management application built into the switch.

While this configuration might be a little more pricey than others, it is a completely
hardware-based solution, centralized at the hotel desk, rather than having devices
throughout the building. We're still researching the possible pitfalls of this
configuration, however 3COM pre-sales staff have been tremendously helpful so far...
they've always been a very good company for us, and that trust and support is worth
any additional cost of the project too.

Can anyone comment on the above proposed configuration? Good, bad or ugly?
